CADENCE
These are different content pages taken from various music magazines. Underneath I have analyzed different pages. By doing this research I have started to picture a layout for my magazine contents page and have started to plan out the layout for my magazine contents page. This research has shown me how the pages can be structured in different ways and has influenced my work.
NME Contents
This is a contents page taken from NME magazine
It includes a large bold title to catch the reader's eye and make them focus on the page. I intend to do this to show that the difference between the pages of my magazine.
NME uses a central image of a group, this is the largest image and this suggests that they are the main feature of the magazine and will therefore feature in the double page spread.
This page uses 7 photos in total. I intend to add in more images of different artists to my contents page.
NME uses different text fonts for each different article, some in bold, and some are in italics to make certain articles stand out from the others surrounding it.
This page also includes the issue date, page numbers, quotes from the interviews, adverts and a "plus" column naming other pages in the issue. I intend to add these to my contents page to make my page look like it belong to a music magazine.
Billboard Contents
This is a contents page taken from Billboard magazine
The page includes page titles, page numbers, 5 different photos. I intend to use different artists in my contents page.
Billboard has place the contents title in the center of the page and I think that this makes the layout look clear. I intend to have my title in the center of the page as I also think that it will help to center the page.
Billboard uses different font colours to highlight different parts of the text for emphasis. They also use a larger photo to show it is the magazines main feature. I intend to do this so that different parts including the main feature stand out to the viewers.
Billboard uses a selection of band photos as well as single artists.
The contents are titled in the center of this page to explain what they will read on this page. Billboard has split up the page so that songs and albums are all listed down the left hand side of the page.
The main photograph is quite large and all of the images together would take up more than half of the contents page.
Billboard also types some information about their magaizne site online and other events they are involved with.
Q Contents
This is a contents page taken from Q magazine
The contents text is in a different colour to make it differ from the rest of the text on the page.
The main feature image takes up most of the right side of the page with a large photograph of one artist. Also Q uses larger text for the main feature. I intend to do this as I think that it gives attention to the main feature.
This page includes an issue date at bottom of page and page numbers with their relating images.
The page titles are all listed on the left hand of the page. I intend to use these so that the viewers can recognise that the artists have different pages.
The page uses 2 photos, one of an artist and another of a band. The smaller photo is a screenshot of a double page spread with a band who feature in this magazine. I intend to use more than 2 image in my contents page.
Q also types their website address at the bottom of the page to let readers view their magazine online. I intend to add in websites as I think that many magazines are also availble online.
Vibe Contents
This is a contents page taken from Vibe magazine
I like this page as it uses bold colours and I think that this makes it appealing to the readers. These colours also give off connotations of the magazine being strong and well organized. I think that this important as the readers will have only seen the front cover and the contents page so I think that the first impressions are important to magazines.
This example is different from my others as it uses one artist taken from a low angle shot. This makes the artist look overpowering and strong, this giving off a powerful mood. I intend to use a powerful image to give off a similar strong mood.
I like how the text has been ordered to one side so that it doesn't cover the artists face. I think that this is important so that the artist’s identity isn't lost. Also I think it's important to not have too much blank space. I think that this contents page has too much empty space and therefore looks slightly blanker than my other examples. I intend not to leave this much blank space on my contents page.
Rolling Stone Contents
This is a contents page taken from Rolling Stone magazine.
I like the layout of this page as I think it would be easy to find an article and I think that it is not blank and not too overwhelming. I intend to get a contents page which is this full.
I like the varied images used in this page as I think the different sizes keeps the page looking interesting. I also like how the text and the photos are kept separate. I intend to keep my images and my text separate from overlapping each other.
I also like how the magazine has used thick lines to separate the main feature from the others. I think that this draws attention to the specific article.
I also like the use of a white, black and red colour scheme. I intend to use a similar strong colour scheme throughout my magazine.
Blender Contents
This is a contents page taken from Blender magazine
I like the title of this contents page. I think that the large text makes it very easy for the reads to know what page they are on. I intend to use a large title font to catch the audiences eyes.
I like how the text has been clearly placed to the left as this stops the page from looking too busy and makes it simple to read.
I think that large image is good for giving a lot of attention to one artist in particular. I don't like the use of such a large image for the contents page as I think it gives the page too much blank space. I think that the magazine could have also used a slightly bigger font for the articles as they look very little in comparison to the title and the image. I think that this would make it harder for the readers to spot a specific feature. From this research I intend to neatly arrange my font and make sure that the font is also not too small. I think that I will also use more text on my contents page to add attention to the page.
I like how the magazine have also placed the date underneath the title as I think that this is different from the other magazines and makes this example unique.
